Baxter Triathlon July 5, 2003 |
The Whipple Wave, otherwise
known as the Baxter Triathlon for 2003, was conducted on Sunday, 5 July,
both starting and ending at Whipple Lake in Baxter. Providing communications for this event, which ran from 0800 until 1130, were seven members of the BAARC: Art, NØTNJ; Alan, AAØAS; Steve, WØTNT; Terry, KIØFW; John, WØJGY; Jon, KBØMNM and Ken, KAØJSW. Each was given a specific location for his operation and reported to the net control station set up on the shore of Whipple Lake, near the headquarters for the occasion. The events were: a 1 mile swim, followed by a 20 mile bike ride and a 5 mile run, in that order. The hams were stationed at "critical intersections" to keep the bicyclists safe and headed the right direction. These were intersections on MN Hwy. 210, Cass Co. 18 and 77, in addition to several intersections within the City of Baxter. The more than 150 participants included ages from teens to well into the 60's. Fortunately, no injuries or serious problems were involved. After the conclusion of the event, the event coordinator, Brad Pickle, congratulated us on our operation and the professionalism displayed. In addition, many people stopped by Net Control to listen in on the reports as they were called in. They seemed to be totally "taken" by the way our hams participated and kept things under control. Already, we have been asked to be back for the event in 2004. |
