Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club

Club Membership Meeting....Thursday, October 27, 2005

There was a panel discussion on alternative sources of electrical power.  Panelists (left to right) were Jim WØIRE, Mark WØMH, and Darrell ABØVP.  Jim uses a car storage battery to power his radios and keeps it topped off with a smart charger.

Mark is a radio broadcast engineer so he built his home with a fully automatic 22 Kilowatt power generator and a 3 KW uninterruptible power supply to keep important systems going during the 10 seconds it takes for the generator to start and come online.

Darrell had the most material to offer about his inverter system.  It creates 120 VAC from huge storage batteries.  The setup is rated at 5 KW continuously and 10 KW for short periods of time.  With 4800 pounds of batteries, it can run his home for days at a time.  The batteries are recharged by huge panels of solar cells and a small generator plant.
