Greetings from the 'Friendly Voice of Huntersville'. Hamming in the month of August to say the least, was a challenge. The K and A index numbers along with sun spot numbers did a 'yo yo' dance. The band openings were few for DXing but when 17-Meters was open to long path propagation, the world of Amateur Radio was calling 'CQ'...I was able to work stations HK5/W5WP in Columbia, CT1CPP in Portugal, FS/N5GI in St. Martin, DJ4DY in Germany, ZK1AHB in Roratonga, 8R1AK in Guyana, 4XIMO in Israel, DJ5AZ in Germany, H4ØDX in the Soloman Islands, KP4DKE in Puerto Rico and JA8CLS in Hokkido Island Japan.
A new addition to my HAM shack is the 'diminutive' Yaesu FT-817 QRP rig with a big voice. I'm quite amazed what can be done with 5 watts...My 1st DX was to Havana, Cuba (CO2TK) and several days later Kanazawa, Japan (JA9AA)...all on 5 watts! There were BIG openings on the 6-Meter band with stations calling from east-to-west, John, KØJO reports making 40 + contacts at each opening. Also, one of my favorites, 2-Meter SSB was going 'gangbusters' throughout the month, my operating frequency is 144.220 with QSO's from Duluth to Minneapolis. I'm looking forward to the fall season for DX openings especially on the 10-Meter band. So long from Huntersville, 73 and good DX. Bob WØZPE
