"Ham Tips" Rendezvous Mobile Installation |
Here is Paula WØHA with her General Motors Rendezvous just before the installation of a radio system. |
Thanks to a lot of work by Paula, here is the classy VHF-UHF mobile installation she did. The radio control head and microphone are on the center console between the driver and passenger. |
Here is a closer look at the installation. The control head is turned toward the driver for ease of operation.
An even
closer look reveals the 1/16th inch aluminum plate with Velcro that holds
the control head into what was once an ash tray. Note there are two
self-tapping hex-head screws holding the aluminum mount in place. The radio and surplus Motorola communications speaker are in the center console below the control head. |
The dual-band antenna is mounted on the driver's side in the engine compartment opposite the regular AM-FM Radio Antenna. The mount is a custom one using 3/16-inch aluminum stock. There is electrical tape around it to prevent the car body paint from being scratched.
Power, to run the radio, is derived from the power distribution box right near the battery in the engine compartment. Note that there are two fuse holders inline with the feed to the radio. One fuse holder is in the (+) lead and the other is in the (-) lead. The (-) lead fuse prevents the radio wiring from burning up if the lead from the negative battery lead and the engine block is defective. |
Thanks to Paula WØHA for letting us use her car as an example for this article.
