December 30, 1999 BAARC Meeting

The December 30, 1999 Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club meeting was moved to the Brainerd Public Library because the meeting date fell on a school holiday and the Mississippi Horizons School was not open.

The evening speaker was Sergeant Tim Leonard of the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office.  Sergeant Leonard described the new 911 emergency system that relies on GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) coordinates to direct police, fire, and ambulance services to any location in the county.  The system directly relates telephone numbers to GPS coordinates and displays that information on computer screens in the dispatch center.  This should, in many cases, dramatically reduce the response time for emergency personnel.

Sergeant Leonard also talked about plans to deal with any problems that might arise as a result of Y2K.  Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club members, coordinated by Ken Magloughlin KAØJSW, work with the county to help when needed.  The relationship between BAARC and Crow Wing County is long term.  Ken has worked diligently on this over the years.
