Angling Horizons
Sylvan Lake,
Confidence Learning Center
Aided by BAARC
On Saturday, 16 September 2000, an event was held, in which 8 members of the Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club, Inc., was involved, by way of providing communications. Though there were no injuries, it was important, also, to keep track of the locations of the various pontoons and fishing boats. Involved in this event were persons who are physically or mentally handicapped. They were loaded onto pontoons for about 6 1/2 hours of fishing. All participants had a great time.
The BAARC, Inc., was privileged to participate for a second year in this event, held in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Fortunately, we didn't even have a single injury and this allowed some of our hams to do a bit of fishing, themselves. Due to a foul-up in the publicity, there were only about 30 handicapped persons participating, though it had been anticipated there could be as many as a hundred. Fish, from about 2-3 ounces, to about 4 pounds were landed and at a fish fry dinner that evening, awards were handed out to all of those who participated.
Bob Slaybough, Camp Director for Confidence Learning Center, conveyed the thanks of every one involved, in his congratulatory announcement at the end of the day's fishing, to the ham radio operators who were on hand to relay messages should the need arise for medical or other aid. He further expressed his hope that if the event is held in 2001; the hams will be on hand, again.
The ten hams participating in the event were: Mel Cook, NØFOO; Jim Shubert, KCØANQ; Bob Englund, KGØZK; Terry May, KIØFW; Orcy Lyle, KCØGWC; Jon Livingston, KCØMNM; Roger Witt, KBØUUN; Greg Mass, NØLJY; Skee Mass, KCØDCY and Ken Magloughlin, KAØJSW.
