2002 Jaycees Fishing Extravaganza

February 9, 2002

The Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club provided communications for the 2002 Jaycees' $150,000 Fishing Extravaganza.  It had been scheduled for January 19th, but was postponed to February 9th.  This is an annual event for both clubs and is a charity fund raiser for the Confidence Learning Center.

Paula, WØHA, SW 1/4 Boss; Al, WØRC, SE 1/4 Boss; John, WØJGY, NW 1/4 Boss; Jim, WAØAXB, SE 1/4 Boss; Terry, KIØFW, Event Chairman; Chandra, KBØYXB, Messenger/Runner, with me as Net Control, all participated in the subject event on Gull Lake, north of Brainerd. We had just enough hams to handle the important positions, for the period of the event, from 1200 - 1500 hrs.

After a three-week delay, caused by insufficient ice, in the area of 7 to 10 inches. Some colder weather moved into the area, resulting in production of additional ice to bring the thickness to at least 17 inches and allowed the event to proceed with the blessings of both the DNR and Crow Wing County Sheriff.

This event turned out to be a relatively quiet one, with about 9,000 fisher-persons on the ice. It was reported that a walleye weighed in a bit over 8 #, early, and at nearly the end of the scheduled 3 hours, a northern pike came in at about 9.4 # to win the Ford Pickup truck.

While we didn't have as much to report during the event, as previously, we did keep the management up-to-date. Also, it was great to have relative warm weather, so the lack of hams to rotate for the positions was not a factor. All who participated had opportunities to come into the Workers' Tent for short respite from the slipping and sliding and direct exposure to the "cool" weather.

It has been reported that approximately $150,000 was raised by the event, for charities in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The management advised that the event committee was thoroughly pleased with our operation and they are already looking forward to our participation in 2003!

We are now looking forward to the Mid-Minnesota Sled Dog Race, which will be held on 2 March 2002, if we receive necessary additional snow. The decision to Go or No Go will be made on 17 February.
