John became a ham in 1948. His father was
3API, then W3API, and later W3NSU. At the age of 13, John began a
correspondence course on radio communications from Nthe National Radio
Institute. As a Junior, he taught the Electrical/Electronics part of his
High School physics class. After graduation, he worked as a lab technician
at Westinghouse in Baltimore, MD, repairing test equipment and making
demonstration equipment such as a 1 tube "Samsonite - suitcase"
induction heater/dielectric heater, predecessor of the microwave oven of
today.
Presently licensed with his original call sign, John was first licensed in Westminster, Maryland, after returning from service in the Navy at the end of W.W.II. Formal education included one year at University of Maryland, a correspondence course on business management, along with classes at Howard County and Carroll County Community Colleges. He taught Sunday school for over 30 years. John sold radio parts and equipment in Washington, DC, for three years where he met Vi, his wife of 54 Years, along with her sister, both from Pequot Lakes, MN, in the church choir. He then went to work at the local Motorola office as Office Manager, then as Radio Communications Representative. John then transferring to Columbia, South Carolina, as a zone sales manager, and re-licensed as W4JRE. He then transferred back to New Jersey offices a project manager and re-licensed as WB2GKY. Then on to the Albany, NY, area as a district representative and then as District Sales Manager. He transferred back to New Jersey keeping the same call sign, as a product consultant for closed circuit television, later as a Health Care Product Consultant and then as a Regional Manager. John later transferred to open a new office near Baltimore, MD, as a product consultant manager for CCTV, Microwave, and telemetry equipment. John moved back to Westminster, MD, the town I was raised in and where is dad was born. He got his original call sign back. After completing 37 years with the same employer John and Vi retired. They spent that first year, 1990, on a planned camping trip wintering in Florida, spring in Maryland, summer in Alaska, and fall in Minnesota. In the interim he was working mobile mostly on 20-meters from their recreational vehicle, with a side trip to Haiti as a short term mission trip and communicating state-side under the call sign W3MQD/HH2 with a dipole strung between palm trees from the Island of LaSouse. John wished everyone could have as much pleasure as he had via Ham Radio. |
