"Fox Hunt"  August 3, 2002

The fox hunters:  (l-r) Skee KCØDCY, his son Greg NØLJY, Orcy WØQT, and the winner, Jim WAØAXB.

The Foxhunt on Saturday, August 03, 2002 went extremely well . . . and perhaps the foxhunters were TOO successful, as they found the fox transmitter after only one hour of searching.   The weather was damp, but the spirits of the foxhunters were not dampened.  The winner (again !) was Jim WAØAXB, using a gain-type yagi antenna, plus diligence.  Jim discovered the fox transmitter literally seconds before second-place winners Skee  KCØDCY and his son Greg NØLJY.  Skee and Greg used a doppler set-up on the top of their pickup truck, and used an “antenna-less” HT to “sniff” out the transmitter.   Orcy WØQT placed third; she was using a 3 element yagi, and a newly constructed attenuator, which she home-brewed after getting the necessary information at last Thursday’s presentation by Mark WØMH on the subject of attenuators.

The transmitter was hidden under a Spruce tree at Mill Park, on the NE side of Brainerd.

I can tell that I will need to be somewhat more deceptive in hiding the transmitter in upcoming hunts . . . I was surprised how rapidly the hunters homed in on the fox.

Car used by Skee  KCØDCY and his son Greg NØLJY.  Note the antennas on the roof that are a part of their locating system Skee shows us where the fox hunt transmitter was found.  It was under the tree behind him.

For prospective hunters, here is a tip: When you are very close to the transmitter, if you do not have sufficient attenuation, which is likely, I would recommend that you switch your radio to the 3rd, 5th, or 7th harmonic of the frequency 146.52 MHz., if you have radios that can receive in those frequency ranges.  This will very significantly attenuate the fox’s signal.  You’ll note that the 3rd harmonic is in the 70 cm range; perhaps a number of you have radios that receive in that frequency range.

The next foxhunt will take place just before the Club Annual Picnic on Sunday, August 25th, and will start at 10 AM.
