Relay for Life event aided by BAARC July 28 - 29, 2006 |
Relay for Life:
Despite 101 degree heat and a power outage that affected
the north half of Brainerd, the Relay for Life event went on as planned.
Seven BAARC members volunteered to assist the American Cancer Society’s
Crow Wing County, 14th annual Relay For Life, our
local community event, Friday night the 28th of July, held at
the Brainerd High School’s football field.
This year’s event had seven major (local) corporate sponsors and over 80 (local) businesses that donated prizes and/or services to help make the event fun and profitable for the society. In all, well over $100,000 was raised to help with the fight against cancer with most of that money staying in local cancer programs. The programs that BAARC operators help to coordinate included: Team Registration, Survivor’s Reception, Opening Ceremonies, Survivors Lap, Lighting of the Luminaries, and the Luminary Ceremony. In addition, they providing observation of a crowd estimated at over 500 attendees, for public safety concerns. Event radio communications was done on VHF simplex with each operator using a hand-held Radio. A portable net control fixed-station was used from a great vantage point, the press box. Weather coordination stations communicated through the club’s main VHF repeater station. Operators participating in year’s event were: Paula WØHA who shadowed key event managers helping with logistics, Al WØRC and Shirley KCØDCW who were the ‘early shift’ organizers helping with set-up, Alan AAØAS and Terry KIØFW the mid-shift operators helping with campsite security and weather monitoring, Mark WØMH who was (as always) our PR person and assisted with weather monitoring, and John WØJGY event coordinator for the club and late shift operator. BAARC activity was praised by event organizer Karen Owen who, again this year, appreciated the frequent weather updates and logistic support, and by Bill Musel who managed all the school district’s physical plant support facilities. He said he found that the information provided by all the ham messages were invaluable to him and his staff in responding to the events’ needs. 73 John WØJGY
