Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club

Baxter Triathlon on August 27,  2006

The Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club provided communications for the Annual Baxter Triathlon on Sunday, August 27th.  The race began with a ½-mile swim in Whipple Lake, then switched to a 17-mile bike ride through the rolling hills surrounding the Baxter-Brainerd Lakes Area and ended with a four-mile run through a nearby residential area.

BAARC members Mark WØMH, Lyle KØLFV, and Terry KIØFW did their job in handling necessary communications.  They are standing in front of some of the high-performance bikes.
The 273 contestants wore ankle RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) devices.  A serial number was registered every time one crossed an RFID checkpoint.  This made it possible for event coordinators to report times for each contestant on each portion of the race.
Contestants, on Whipple Lake, are seen swimming the half-mile course.  Swimmers started on the right side of the picture and returned on the left side.  In this photo, the first person through is rushing ashore.
A 17-mile bike run was next.  Three bike flat tires problems were reported by Lyle KØLFV back to Terry KIØFW in Net Control.
Finally, the contestants ran two miles out and two miles back to the finish line.  Three of them are shown at the two-mile turnaround point.  They were getting pretty tired at this end of the event.

Watching this checkpoint was one of the duties that day for Mark WØMH.

A fun time was had by all.  Lunch was free as were event T shirts.

From the Mailbag on August 29, 2006: (Regarding the Baxter Triathlon) Thanks for your help.  You guys are so great to work with and make it such a comfort know where everyone is.  You all are very good at what you do. Thanks once again and next year will be here before you know it! Brad Pickle, Baxter Triathlon Coordinator.
