Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club

Club Membership Meeting on Thursday, June 28, 2007

This meeting was held at the Brainerd Fire Station at Laurel and First on the east side of the Mississippi River.

Wayne KCØYRZ gave a presentation on how to use a fire extinguisher. He explained that fire is a chemical reaction and it happens in a small area around the fuel. The rest of the flame is exhaust gas from the fire. Wayne emphasized pulling the round pin on the extinguisher before trying to use the extinguisher on a fire. The example extinguisher, he is holding, will throw powder on a fire for 14 seconds. He recommended using only as much as necessary to put out the fire and then wait at least ten seconds to see if the fire re-ignites. Use the remaining powder on the fire, if necessary, at that point.

Marv WØYHE gave a talk to the group on the Elecraft kit building he did over the past few years.  Al KCØGWB had questions and listened with great interest as Marv explained his experiences. Marv said he had as much fun building the kits than he did operating them.

Marv spent six weeks building the 100-watt amplifier and automatic antenna tuner kit while at his winter home in Arizona. He hails from Brainerd and lives on the north side of Brainerd, on Gilbert lake, during the summer nowadays.

The automatic tuner is on the left and the 100-watt amplifier is on the right.  The two go together in the same box and are the companion for the Elecraft KX2 Transceiver.
Marv also showed his T1 Antenna Tuner and his KX1 transceiver with built-in keyer.  The only problem is that it is so light that he has to hold onto it with one hand while keying with the other hand.
(l-r) Jim WØYA and Darrell ABØVP.
(l-r) Lyle KØLFV, Steve WØTNT, and Shirley KØDCW who recently upgraded her call from KCØDCW.
