Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club

Club Membership Meeting....September 30, 2004

The September membership meeting of the Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club was held at Hunt Technologies near Pequot Lakes, MN.

The 5-million dollar Hunt Technologies corporate building.
BAARC hams gathered for a photo.
At the meeting, Steve WØTNT put in a pitch for volunteers to help at the annual Goblin Watch on October 31st.  He dressed as a goblin to stir a little interest at the gathering.
Tom WØQF was the tour guide at Hunt Technologies near Pequot Lakes. He showed many interested club members the Turtle power meter reader technology.

Turtles are incorporated in electric power meters to report usage. The Turtle name comes from the fact that data is moved at an extremely slow rate.

Each Turtle is assigned an operating frequency near 120 Hz to transmit data back to power sub-stations. Turtle transmitters are spaced at 1/1000th Hz intervals. As many as 3000 Turtle meters can report usage simultaneously on a single power line. It takes a Turtle equipped meter a full day to report the number that you see on its face. About 4 million are installed world-wide. There are 120 employees in the headquarters building. Manufacturing of the product is done in Hibbing and near Minneapolis.
The next BAARC Membership Meeting will be back in Brainerd.  Details.  Hope to see you there.

Jack Miller, BAARC V.P. and Program Chairman.
