The 17th Annual Jaycees Ice Fishing
Extravaganza was an outstanding success.
Participants were dropped off at the busing area and entered
the contest area by walking through a
corridor of American flags. BAARC members
contributed again this year by assisting in public safety and
contest administrative radio
communications. Event coordinators thought the 11.000+ attendance may have met or exceeded last years totals. Holes were drilled in the ice on Friday. There was very little snow on the lake so ice cleats were a must. The lucky winner drove home in a new truck after catching a 4.91-pound northern pike. Club Co-Chairs Al WØRC and John W ØJGY did a great job getting the Club Communications Trailer onto the ice Friday and arrived early Saturday morning to coordinate the hams at this event. Both of the VHF repeaters were used coordinating arrivals and departures with all on-lake communications taking place on 146.580 simplex. Shirley KCØDCW did an excellent job as Net Control and also monitored three other frequencies.Other operators working very hard at the event included Gary KØPOW, Greg NØLJY, Dave KCØTGT, Paula WØHA, Alan AAØAS, and Terry KIØFW. All worked with quarter bosses or head-of-security at one time or another. Jim WØJDS worked at the first-aid tent, and Curt NØCRM was located near the boat landing helping with ambulance and first-aid communication. Al WØRC was on his four-wheel ATV and helped with the placement of personnel to minimize operator walking distances and transported replacements so operators could return to the communications trailer to warm-up. John WØJGY, picked up the pieces by doing a little bit of a lot of things to make things run smoothly. As always there was a lot to learn about Ham Radio, public safety radio interface, cell phone, and family radio service use as they all are applied to a huge event such as this. All in all, everything worked very fine with areas to improve for next year. There was a good time to be had by all. Story by Paula WØHA |

It was a great event. A big thanks to everyone who gave so freely of their time and talents, again this year. |
